Oak Class Year 5 & 6

Our class teachers are Mrs Fairest and Mrs Fox

We will encourage children to aim high and become the best that they can be.  We have the highest expectations of our children, as well as ourselves.

We look forward to welcoming you to Oak Class.

🌳 Welcome to Oak Class!

Hello and welcome to Oak Class!

It has been such a joy to have the children back in school, and I am already so proud of how well they have settled into routines and shown such enthusiasm for their learning. There is a real buzz in the classroom, and I am excited for all that we will achieve together this year.

In Oak Class, we set high expectations for everyone – in behaviour, in attitude, and in work ethic. We believe that with effort, resilience and kindness, every child can achieve their very best.

📘 Reading

At our school, we value reading highly – it underpins all areas of learning and opens doors to new knowledge and imagination. Children are expected to read at home a minimum of three times per week, and this should be signed off by a grown-up in their reading record.

To support children who may find it tricky to complete their reading at home, I will be running a Reading Club every Monday. This gives children the chance to catch up and develop their confidence in a supportive setting.

📝 Homework

A homework sheet has already been sent home and can be found in the children’s yellow homework books. One piece of homework is expected each week and should be handed in every Wednesday. To support children, I will also be running a Homework Club on Thursdays for any children who haven’t had time to complete their work or have forgotten to bring it in.

🔢 Times Tables & ✏️ Spellings

  • Times tables will be practised, checked and recorded every Monday.

  • Spelling rules will be introduced every Friday and tested the following Friday.

Both spellings and times tables will now be recorded in homework books, so it is important that children keep these books in their bags and bring them to school every day.

🎶 Music & 🏊 Swimming

We are very lucky this half term to be learning a new instrument in Music –  steel pans! These lessons will take place every Thursday morning.

We also have the luxury of going swimming every Friday afternoon, so please make sure swim kits are in school on Fridays.

Alongside swimming, we will have one other PE lesson on either Monday or Thursday. For this reason, PE kits should be kept in school throughout the week.

I am really looking forward to the exciting learning, new challenges, and wonderful experiences ahead in Oak Class this year. Thank you for your support in helping your child be ready, organised and enthusiastic each day!

Warm regards,
Mrs Fairest 🌟

February 2026

To round off our fabulous Space topic this half term, Oak Class ventured to the National Space Centre in Leicester. They started the day off by exploring the different interactive rooms starting with the Solar System, then The Universe, Home Planet and Into Space.

Following this, they visited the UK’s biggest planetarium (Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium). The children were blown away, journeying through the solar system, visiting the different planets and learning some amazing facts – some they didn’t know.

Finally, we visited the iconic Rocket Tower. This is home to Blue Streak and Thor Able rockets, as well as the Gagarin Experience, Apollo Lunar Lander and real Moon Rock. The four exhibition decks tell the story of the Space Race, history of rockets as well as Britain’s Space Race.

This was an out-of-this-world school trip that has helped inspire the next generation of space scientists and engineers at Temple Normanton Primary Academy. Everyone had such a fantastic day and represented the school brilliantly!
